Pahayag ng CHR spokesperson, Atty Jacqueline Ann de Guia, ukol na video ng isang PWD na pinabababa sa jeep

Ikinababahala ng Komisyon sa mga Karapatang Pantao ang insidente sangkot ang isang driver na pilit pinabababa ang isang person with disability (o PWD) na sakay ng jeep. Kita sa kumakalat na video ang pagtatanggol ng mga kapwa pasahero sa lalaking lulan ng isang wheelchair.

Malinaw sa Magna Carta for Disabled Persons (Republic Act No. 7277) na may karampatang parusa ang hayagang diskriminasyon laban sa ating mga kababayang disabled persons, kasama ang diskriminasyon sa paggamit ng pampublikong transportasyon. Inaatasan din ng nasabing batas na iimbestigahan ng Secretary of Justice ang anumang paglabag sa mga kaparatan ng PWDs. Kasama dito ang National Council on Disability Affairs ng Department of Social Welfare and Development na inaasahan namang bantayan ang implementasyon ng iba’t ibang batas at polisiya kaugnay sa proteksyon ng mga karapatan ng PWDs sa buong bansa.

Kailanman hindi naging kabawasan sa dignidad ang pagkakaroon ng kapansanan. Tinatawagan namin ang gobyerno na lalo pang paigtingin ang edukasyon sa publiko ukol sa karaparatan ng disabled persons, mga batas na simisigurado sa mga ito, at gawing makabuluhan ang mga polisiya sa pamamagitan ng maayos na pagpapatupad ng mga ito. ###
