We welcome the recent decision of the Supreme Court favouring the release of documents related to the government’s campaign against illegal drugs. The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) sees this directive as a reminder to the government to observe the rule of law in the face of rising human rights violations that abound.
Even from the start, CHR have persistently urged the government to assure justice to all deaths, especially those allegedly linked to its campaign against illegal drugs. It is only through greater transparency that we can ascertain the truth behind the circumstances leading to these killings and possibly make every perpetrator accountable for their offences against the right to life among others.
We then urge the government to ensure that its policies will always safeguard the general welfare of people, and not only of a select few, in keeping with its obligation to respect, protect, and fulfill the human rights of all. As such, we look forward to the government’s faithful compliance to the Supreme Court’s order.
