Statement of CHR spokesperson, Atty Jacqueline Ann de Guia, on the conduct of a plebiscite to ratify the creation of a new Bangsamoro autonomous region

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) welcomes the start of the plebiscite today, 21 January 2018, towards the ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law, envisioned to usher the creation of a new Bangsamoro autonomous region in Mindanao.

Not only does this exercise gives way to the people’s right to political participation but, more importantly, asserts the right of Moros and non-Moros alike to self-determination.

CHR shall continuously stand for measures that will allow the people to chart their futures through their choice of political structure within the bounds of our laws and national sovereignty. Through this process, it is our shared hope that we can finally correct the injustices committed against our Moro sisters and brothers and find a balance in advancing the rights and welfare of the peoples of Mindanao. All of these is hoped to fulfil the dream of a just and durable peace in this region, which has escaped the people for far too long. ###
