Statement of CHR Spokesperson, Atty. Jacqueline Ann de Guia, on the killing and hanging of a man in Talisay City bridge

The hanging body of a man in Talisay City bridge is a deplorable display of violence. A placard was placed on the man’s body alleging him a robber. The Commission vehemently denounces this brutish act along with a slew of similar killings that arbitrarily deprive the right to life and due process. The CHR-Region VII has already dispatched a Quick Response Team to investigate and monitor the case.

Vigilante killings have been incessant, which contribute to the growing culture of impunity. The need for aggressive and serious efforts to address these type of killings have been our unrelenting reminder to the government. The State must endeavor to create a conducive environment where the right to life of all is protected and crimes are punished through judicial process. Addressing criminality is superficial if the harrowing culture of violence and disregard for life shroud our society. We harp again our reminder that the State must expediently demonstrate genuine willingness and ability to resolve these killings. ###
