As part of our Constitutional mandate to investigate alleged human rights violations in the country, the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has taken cognisance of the reported murder of Rodrigo Tanagas, a barangay captain in Cavite, on 31 August 2024.

Reports say that Tanagas was gunned down by a riding-in-tandem while he was helping the health workers while they were cutting grass in Brgy. Tulay-A, Maragondon, where he was elected as the barangay captain. As of writing, the suspects and their motives are yet to be identified.

The CHR acknowledges the swift response of the police in order to promptly resolve the killing of Tanagas. On our part, the CHR is also coordinating with the relevant individuals and authorities to aid in the investigation of this case to ensure that accountability is exacted from the perpetrators.

Proactive and preventive measures must be implemented to directly address the persisting occurrence of violence on the ground. As the 2025 midterm election nears, it is incumbent upon the State to ensure a secure environment where elected officials can serve their constituents without fear. Likewise, it is essential that voters are afforded the confidence and safety needed to engage in the electoral process.
