Statement of the Commission on Human Rights decrying the death of a college student allegedly due to hazing

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) vehemently decries the death of John Matthew Salilig, the missing 24-year old college student from Adamson University, who was allegedly killed in a fraternity hazing. Local police authorities found the victim’s body in a pit in Imus, Cavite, which had reportedly been buried for ten days. CHR Region IV-A has initiated its independent motu proprio investigation on this violent incident. The Commission continues to condemn all forms of physical or psychological harm. Preliminary incident reports from the police indicate that the victim’s death may be due to hazing related activities as a wooden paddle was found in the house of one of the suspects. The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) is appalled at the recent rise in hazing-related incidents, and calls on the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to rush the Implementing Rules and Regulation (IRR) for the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018. This cruel and inhumane practice must end, and it is clear that the longer strict criminalization is delayed the more danger our students are in.
