Statement of CHR Cordillera Administrative Region Regional Director, Atty. Romel P. Daguimol, on the killing of eight persons whose bodies were discovered at Sitio Poyopoy, Taloy Sur, Benguet

The killing of eight persons whose bodies were discovered at Sitio Poyopoy, Taloy Sur, Tuba, Benguet breaks the heart of every Cordilleran who has been taught to avoid violence and do only what is rights (inayan). The peoples in this culture-bound region strongly believe taking the life of another person runs counter to their indigenous norms and morals.

As as office that advocates fro the dignity and respect for the rights of every human persons, we are appalled by the foregoing acts of arbitrary deprivation of life. Regardless of intention and purpose, deliberate killing is unacceptable and a grave violation of human rights. Even under international and national laws, killing is forbidden save only for certain instances at the determination of the court after observance of due process of law.

This office has begun its motu proprio investigation on the incident independent of those being conducted by the police and other law enforcement agencies of the government. We call on everyone who has knowledge or information about the said incident to shed light on the same by approaching this office, or any of the investigating agencies. Together we can put a stop to impunity and bring the perpetrators to justice.
