Statement of CHR Spokesperson, Atty Jacqueline Ann de Guia, on the attack against Dumaguete Radio Anchor

The Commission on Human Rights condemns the violent killing of Dumaguete-based radio broadcaster Dindo Generoso by unidentified riding-in-tandem gunmen today.

We urge the local government and the police to ensure the immediate capture and prosecution of the perpetrators with the full force of the law.

Generoso is the second reported journalist killed by gunmen in Dumaguete after Edmond Sestoso in 2018. The increasing number of attacks against members of the press around the country signifies the shrinking democratic space for free speech and expression. Such blatant human rights violations demand for stronger government action to ensure the protection, safety and freedom of media workers.

The Commission extends our condolences to the family of the victim and vows to conduct its own investigation of the case.###
