Statement of CHR Spokesperson, Atty Jacqueline Ann de Guia, on the Misamis Oriental grenade blast

The Commission on Human Rights honours the courage and bravery of Police Major Seargeant Jason Magno who selflessly responded to the call of duty by sacrificing his own life to save innocent civilians, and strongly condemns the violence that transpired in Initao College, Misamis Oriental yesterday.

It is truly heartbreaking that we lost another dedicated police officer and a hero who stayed faithful to his mandate of serving and protecting the people. No lives should be wasted in such unnecessary brutality.

We express our deepest condolences to the family, colleagues, and friends of Police Master Sargeant Magno and hopes for the speedy recovery of the policewoman and students who were hurt in the grenade blast.

Although local authorities have identified the suspect, the Commission calls for the immediate investigation of the case to determine the motive behind the attack.###
