Statement of the CHR spokesperson, Atty Jacqueline Ann De Guia, on the signing of the National Vision Screening Act

The Commission on Human Rights commends the signing of Republic Act No. 11358, entitled “National Vision Screening Act,” which mandates the establishment of the National Vision Screening Program. The said program will provide trained teachers and health personnel to screen the vision of kindergarten pupils to help them identify pupils with any possible vision problems.

Routine vision checks are vital during a child’s younger years. It ensures that their development is not compromised by ensuring that they can take full advantage of their education by detecting visual impairments early on. Passing this law allows for all Filipino children around the country to properly exercise their right to education. We commend the government for taking these steps in making sure our children can have productive futures and live full lives with dignity. ###
