The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) extends its commendation to the Philippine National Police (PNP) for the activation of its virtual helpline for women and children who experience abuse, violence, and concerns related to their safety, protection, and empowerment. Dubbed “AlengPulis with the CyberSquad,” this initiative by the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group is a significant step in addressing the pervasive issue of gender-based violence, particularly in the digital realm.
Gender-based violence remains a deeply alarming issue that affects countless individuals, especially women and children. Our increasingly digital world has unfortunately provided new platforms for abuse and exploitation, which heighten the vulnerability of the aforementioned sectors.
As duty-bearer, it is incumbent upon the government to be ahead of those who seek to prey on the vulnerable using online platforms. Amid the persistent challenges to the safety and empowerment of women and children, the launch of “AlengPulis with the CyberSquad” helpline is a commendable effort that seeks to provide assistance, support, and guidance to individuals experiencing abuse, exploitation, and harassment in the online sphere.
Many victims of gender-based abuse and violence are hesitant to seek help due to shame and stigma. CHR acknowledges that the helpline leverages various channels, including social media platforms, to provide accessible assistance to those in need, enabling them to seek help and guidance in times of distress.
The Commission also notes the commitment of the PNP to ensure the protection, privacy, and safety of the victims. Safeguarding the rights of victims is fundamental in any initiative aimed at assisting them. It recognizes their inherent dignity and helps ensure their safety from further harm.
To ensure the success of this initiative, CHR calls upon all sectors to actively support and cooperate with the PNP in their effort to combat gender-based violence.
