Statement of the Commission on Human Rights condemning the killing of journalist Juan ‘Johnny’ Dayang

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) vehemently condemns the brazen attack committed against veteran journalist Juan ‘Johnny’ Dayang, who was shot dead inside his home in Kalibo, Aklan on 29 April 2025.

The victim was declared dead on arrival after being shot by an unidentified assailant. The gunman, who arrived on a motorcycle, stopped outside the victim’s residence, fired three shots from beyond the fence, and fled the scene.

Dayang was the president of the Publishers Association of the Philippines Inc. (PAPI) and a former publisher of the Philippine Graphic, as well as a columnist under the Manila Bulletin Publishing Corp.

The Commission acknowledges the swift response of law enforcement agencies in the area in conducting an immediate and thorough investigation into the attack on Dayang.

In line with its commitment to promoting a safer environment for all media workers, CHR has deployed a Quick Response Operation (QRO) Team to undertake an independent investigation.

The Commission extends its sincerest condolences to the victim’s loved ones and calls for justice to be served.

Furthermore, the Commission urges members of the media to promptly report any incidents of threats, harassment, or attacks through the Alisto! Alert Mechanism, an initiative recently launched to strengthen efforts in safeguarding media welfare. This mechanism provides a direct channel for media professionals to raise concerns related to their safety and security.

Now more than ever, we must stand with the Fourth Estate in defending the truth—our freedom’s foundation—and act urgently to ensure journalists can do their work safely. ###
