Statement of the Commission on Human Rights on the ambush of an election officer and spouse in Maguindanao del Norte

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) vehemently denounces the killing of an election officer and her spouse in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte. In response to this alarming incident, CHR Region XII is currently conducting an investigation and taking cognizance of the case.

This reprehensible act not only extinguishes innocent lives but also instills fear and creates a chilling effect among public servants, election officers, and the general public, as it undermines the core of our democratic processes.

With the upcoming national and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) elections, this act of violence casts a shadow of fear that may discourage the participation of both voters and public servants alike. CHR believes that the safety of those involved in electoral processes must be prioritized to uphold the sanctity of democracy.

In this regard, the Commission calls on all relevant authorities to take immediate and decisive action to investigate this attack and bring the perpetrators to justice.

CHR reiterates that violence, impunity, and acts of brutality have no place in our society. It is our collective duty to work together in promoting peaceful and credible elections, where the will of the people is protected and respected.

Patuloy ang ating panawagan—sama-sama nating isulong ang isang payapa, patas, at makataong #Eleksyon2025.
