Statement of the Commission on Human Rights on the case of slain radio reporter in Cagayan Oro

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) welcomes the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office’s speedy investigation and filing of murder charges against the suspected perpetrators of the shooting of radio commentator Federico “Ding” Gempesaw. On 29 June 2022, the radio reporter was shot in broad daylight in front of his home in Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City.

Gempesaw hosted the block-time radio program “Bitayan sa Kahanginan” (Gallows On-Air) on Radyo Natin and is known as a hard-hitting commentator. Based on police investigation, the killing of Gempesaw was connected to his media work. They also disclosed that the crime was masterminded by a “big figure” and two gunmen executed the plan.

The CHR Regional Office X continues its independent motu propio probe into the case to aid in ensuring justice. We are hopeful of the action and cooperation of the city police and other relevant government agencies to ensure speedy resolution for this violation of the right to life of another media worker.

The Commission continues to remind the government of the importance of ascertaining accountability in all cases of media killings and harassments to ensure a conducive environment that fosters the right to truth and information and to curb impunity. We also expect strengthened protection for media practitioners to prevent further violence and to enable them to continue their public service without fear of reprisal and attack.
