Statement of the Commission on Human Rights on the Department of Education’s hiring of new teachers
The Commission on Human Rights welcomes the Department of Education’s pronouncement that there will be 40,000 new public school teachers added to the roster by the time classes start in June 2017. This surge in new items is mostly due to the K-12 program, with the majority of the new educators to teach in senior high school.
Also greatly encouraging are the comments from Secretary Leonor Briones on the recruitment of over 10,000 non-teaching staff and the construction of nearly 50,000 new classrooms.
For these reasons the Commission salutes the efforts exerted by the Department of Education in this direction and looks forward to their promised report on the state of their readiness for the opening of classes in the first week of June. ■

It is also considered by UNESCO to be essential for the exercise of all other human rights. The creation of jobs further respects the economic right to work enshrined in both the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights and the International Convention on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights.
