The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) condemns the recent spate of killings involving local officials, a political supporter, and the members of the vulnerable sectors. Barely days after CHR dispatched an investigation team to look into the killing of a Barangay Captain in Malabon, we are confronted again with a similar crime occurring in Agusan del Sur concerning the killing of a Barangay Captain by riding-in-tandem suspects.
In Pangasinan, a supporter of the incumbent Mayor of Dagupan, and a political aspirant allegedly running for barangay chairman in the coming local election was gunned down by unidentified gunmen in the parking area of the cockpit arena in Pangasinan Coliseum, Barangay San Miguel on Sunday, 29 May 2022. On the same day, a village chief and two others survived an attempt on their life outside the Baggao Cockpit Arena.
As CHR conducts its parallel investigation on the cases mentioned, we hope that the Philippine National Police will probe the deaths to uncover the truth and hold perpetrators accountable.
CHR will also be conducting a motu propio investigation into the alleged rape-slay of a single mother in in San Miguel, Bulacan and the death of an eight-year-old child in Pasig who died under the care of his parents who allegedly applied excessive force in instilling discipline. The Commission will work closely with local authorities to aid in solving these brazen violations on the right to life.
