The Commission on Human Rights condemns the reported confiscation of the belongings of a photojournalist in Silang, Cavite on 20 April 2024. Pursuant to our mandate and commitment to take a more active stance in protecting the rights of media workers, the CHR has deployed a Quick Response Operation to ascertain the details of the incident and conduct an investigation. The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) welcomes the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office’s speedy investigation and filing of murder charges against the suspected perpetrators of the shooting of radio commentator Federico “Ding” Gempesaw. On 29 June 2022, the radio reporter was shot in broad daylight in front of his home in Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City. Gempesaw hosted the block-time radio program “Bitayan sa Kahanginan” (Gallows On-Air) on Radyo Natin and is known as a hard-hitting commentator. The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) strongly condemns the physical assault against radio broadcaster Florencio “Flo” Hervias on 07 October 2022. Initial reports reveal that a group of masked men, who allegedly pretended to be sanitation workers, mauled Hervias in broad daylight after leaving his workplace in La Paz District, Iloilo City. He sustained lacerations on his nose, mouth, and near his eyes. His perpetrators, however, fled the scene. Hervias hosts the blocktime program “Banwa Binag-binaga” in DYRI Radio Mindanao Network.
