The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) raises serious concern over the disturbing increase in killings of barangay officials across the country. These incidents are particularly alarming as they appear to escalate with the approach of the 2025 local and national elections. In response, CHR, through its regional offices, has initiated motu proprio investigations and Quick Response Operations (QRO) to aid in determining the truth. The Commission on Human Rights vehemently condemns the recent killings of barangay officials across the country. This year has seen an increase in the number of incidents involving violence against barangay officials, which is alarming and necessitates an immediate investigation. These incidents have been endorsed to various CHR regional offices for further investigation and launching of a quick response operation (QRO) to assist with the investigation. The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) is alarmed by the series of reported attacks against barangay officials. At least seven incidents of alleged ambushes, with 11 people killed, eight of which are barangay officials, have already been recorded as of this writing. On 08 February 2024, Roberto Carpio, a councilor in Nueva Ecija, was allegedly targeted by two gunmen while he was driving his motorcycle in Brgy. Sto. Cristo in his town, according to reports. PRESS STATEMENT | 14 January 2018 Addressing the problem on the sale and use of illegal drugs is best achieved with the participation of all concerned, especially the community. At the same time, Constitutional guarantees, such as presumption of innocence and right to due process, are in place to ensure that human rights are protected at all times.
