The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has taken cognisance of the case involving the alleged abduction of two activists in Tabaco City, Albay. The CHR Region 5 has already launched a Quick Response Operation (QRO) to investigate the matter. Based on reports, James Jasminez, 63, was allegedly taken by a group of men and forced into a white van on the night of 23 August 2024. The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has taken cognisance of the reported disappearance of Rowena “Owen” Dasig, an environmental defender from Calabarzon, whose charges had been recently dismissed by the Gumaca Regional Trial Court Branch 172 on 13 August 2024. As of writing, there have been no updates on the whereabouts of Dasig after she had been freed from the Lucena City District Jail (LCDJ). It must be remembered that Dasig was arrested with Miguela “Ella” Peniero, a community health worker who is still being detained to this date, by the police and the military on 12 July 2023 in Atimonan, Quezon. It must be remembered that Lariosa, a member of the Kilusang Mayo Uno in the Southern Mindanao Region, had been allegedly arrested by suspected military agents on 10 April 2024 in Barangay Butong, Quezon, Bukidnon. House Resolution No. 406, Resolution Urging the Philippine Government to Adopt and Ratify the Declaration on the Protection of all Persons from Enforced Disappearances as Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 47/133 of 15 Dember 1992 The United Nations has condemned “disappearances” as grave violation of human rights and their systematic practice is of the nature of a crime against humanity. It is high time for the Philippine Government to adopt and ratifty the United Nations Assembly Resolution 47/133 of 18 December 1992, and to implement Amnestly International’s (AI) Fourteen Point Program for the Prevention of Disappearance.
