The CHR expresses its deepest sympathies and sends prayers to the family and friends of overseas worker Dafnie Nacalaban, who was found dead after being reported missing. The CHR acknowledges the efforts of the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in seeking justice for Dafnie Nacalaban. No Filipino should face harm while striving for a better future abroad. The Commission, pursuant to its mandate, stands in solidarity with all efforts to secure justice for the victim, and will continue to monitor the government’s compliance with laws and treaties that pertain to the protection of Filipino migrant workers’ rights. ###

The Commission on Human Rights vehemently condemns the recent killings of barangay officials across the country. This year has seen an increase in the number of incidents involving violence against barangay officials, which is alarming and necessitates an immediate investigation. Also known as Dok Ting, Bolor, 63 years old, was also known within the area as a dentist and was also a former barangay captain before being elected as a kagawad in the recent polls. The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) in Region IV-B is undertaking an independent motu propio investigation on the shooting of radio broadcaster Cresenciano Aldovino Bunduquin in Barangay Sta. Isabel, Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro. According to a police report, Bunduquin was shot several times in front of his store by motorcyle-riding men who stopped by his store in the early morning of 31 May 2023. Bunduquin’s son allegedly chased the assailants and accidentally bumped their motorcycle. One of the gunmen sustained injuries from the collision and eventually died while the other one escaped.
