The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) remains firm in its stance to defend the free press and calls for the protection of all media workers in the country. We do not and cannot take lightly any threats or any allusions to harm the lives of journalists, regardless if such statements are deliberate or cursory. Threats to media safety and freedom are real and alarming. How these threats impact on the nation’s democracy is what makes them truly dangerous. It is high time to put at the center of discussions concrete ways on how we can secure a functioning and safe space for journalists to allow them to fully perform their duty as watchdogs and truth-tellers.
