The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) offices in Region I and Region IV-A are conducting an independent probe on two recent killings that mar the welcoming of the new year. On New Year’s Eve, Prosecutor Edilbert Mendoza was killed in front of his home in Trece Martires, Cavite. On New Year’s Day, ex-mayor Aldrin Cerdan of Anda, Pangasinan was allegedly shot by an M-16 by his former bodyguard and driver following a heated argument.
It is condemnable that brazen violations on the right to life continue to happen even as we welcome the start of a new year. CHR recognises the swift investigation and immediate arrest of the suspect by the Pangasinan police. We equally urge the Cavite police to ensure expedient justice on the death of Atty. Mendoza. The Commission reiterates its consistent reminder to the government to prevent and address all forms of killings, as well as the environment of persistent impunity in the country. As we welcome 2022, we look forward to significant progress and proactive actions from the government toward protecting the utmost right to life, as well as the entire gamut of human rights. #StopTheKillings
