Pahayag ni CHR Spokesperson, Atty Jacqueline Ann de Guia, sa pagpanaw ni Dating Senate President Aquilino 'Nene' Pimentel

The Commission on Human Rights mourns the passing of a fearless Filipino stateman and human rights defender, Former Senate President Aquilino ‘Nene’ Pimentel Jr.

In a span of more than four decades, Ka Nene dedicated his life of service to the Filipino people as a senator, assemblyman, and Minister of Local Government. He was remembered as one of the most vocal critics and leading opposition leaders of the Marcos dictatorship who was arrested and detained for challenging the Martial Law regime.

As a lawmaker, he was most known for authoring the Local Government Code, a landmark legislation that strengthened the role of local government units in national development and was also a strong advocate of electoral reforms in the country after being a victim of electoral fraud himself.

As a human rights champion, Ka Nene always emphasised the primacy of rule of law and respect for the Constitution, and recognised the special protection needed for the poor, disadvantaged and marginalised sectors of the society.

Ka Nene will always be remembered for committing his life’s work to improving the lives of others, standing up for truth and integrity, and protecting our democracy.

Our deepest sympathies and condolences go to the Pimentel family for the loss of their loving patriarch, and our full support to CHR Commissioner Gwendolyn Pimentel-Gana in these trying times.

Your work and words of wisdom will live on, Ka Nene.

Rest in power!
