Statement of CHR spokesperson, Atty. Jacqueline Ann de Guia, on the government clash with Abu Sayyaf in Sulu

The Commission on Human Rights condemns the inhumane attack of the Abu Sayyaf against our Filipino soldiers in Patikul, Sulu on Friday, 17 April 2020.

Reports from the government tally 11 soldiers killed in the crossfire, with 3 of them brutally hacked—a blatant assault against human dignity. It is most unfortunate that our soldiers’ lives are the cost of securing peace in our communities.

We offer our prayers and sympathies to the families of our fallen soldiers. And in honour of the sacrifices of our heroes, we call on the government to ensure assistance to the bereaved families. ###
