Pahayag ng Commission on Human Rights na nagpapahayag ng pagkabahala sa ginawang pag-atake laban sa isang mamamahayag sa San Pablo City, Laguna

The Commission on Human Rights condemns the attack committed against a journalist in Brgy. San Gregorio, San Pablo City, Laguna on 15 July 2024. As part of our undertaking and commitment to foster a society where all media workers can exercise their profession free from violence, intimidation, and harassment, the CHR has launched its independent investigation on this matter to determine the truth behind the incident.

Two unidentified motorcycle-riding gunmen reportedly targeted journalist Marc Angelo Barrios in Laguna, firing seven shots at him. Barrios escaped the encounter unhurt, with only his motorcycle hit by the gunshots.

CHR reiterates the role of a free press in a democratic society. Attacks made against media workers are attacks on the fundamental right of all to freedom of expression, speech, and our access to truth, through reliable sources of information.

We take note of the efforts of the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) for also taking cognisance of the matter.

We remain firm on our stance that committing any acts of violence against journalists who take on the responsibility of delivering truthful information to the public is contrary to the enrichment of a democratic society. May this incident serve as a reminder to all duty-bearers to ensure that a safe environment is accessible to all Filipinos as they report about the truth.

The Commission also takes this opportunity to urge the community of media workers to report all cases of incidents which attack and threaten all members of the media through our Alisto! Alert Mechanism. This is an initiative recently launched by the CHR as part of its commitment to be more proactive towards the improvement of media welfare in the country, where the press may directly contact the Commission regarding matters that compromise the safety of the media in the country.

Freedom of the press is a mark of a healthy and functioning State. The CHR will always stand for the rights of all media workers in promoting a society where truth is central in our democracy, and that they are able to freely practice their duty free from any intimidation, harm, and violence.###
