Statement of the Commission on Human Rights on the ambush of a barangay kagawad in Tanza, Cavite

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) is currently investigating the fatal shooting of a barangay kagawad by a riding-in-tandem assailant in Barangay Bagtas, Tanza, Cavite.

According to Tanza Police, the suspects had reportedly followed the official from their home to the barangay hall. The victim’s family had earlier noticed unfamiliar individuals loitering near their residence as early as March. Authorities are exploring the possibility that the attack was related to the victim’s work in public office.

The Commission strongly condemns any act that violates the right to life. A Quick Response Operation (QRO) has been deployed to help ensure accountability and justice for the victim’s family.

With the gun ban still in effect, CHR expresses concern over the blatant disregard for laws meant to protect public safety. Such violence undermines peace and order and endangers communities. We call on law enforcement to intensify efforts in preventing further violence.

CHR remains vigilant and urges government and local authorities to adopt proactive measures to prevent similar attacks. As duty-bearers, we share the responsibility of building a society where every Filipino—including those in public service—can live in peace and security. ###
